Top tips for touring the wild atlantic way

Best to travel South to North

If you travel South to North will mean that the majority of the views will be on your left so if you want to stop to take in the scenery you will not have to cross the road.

Break the WAW into 3 different stages

The Wild Atlantic Way is 2500 km not that long but with a average speed of 50 kph you need at least 4 weeks to do it properly.

Here’s how you could break it up:

(a) North Coast and North West of Ireland: Northern Ireland and Donegal.

(b) Mid West Coast: Galway, Mayo and Sligo

(c) South West: Cork, Kerry, and Clare.

Talk to the locals

Locals can tell you the best roads to follow. Make sure not to rush away because they usually have a funny story to tell you as well.

Get off the Beaten path

Every road you turn into is a new experience. While the roads in Ireland may not be the best, they will bring you to many special places.

Eat local stay local

There are hundreds of small hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campsites along the Wild Atlantic Way. They are good value for money and locals can give you great advice of routes to take and places to see and eat.

Traveler Stories

Bernard WOW what an amazing journey/trip. From your recommendation at the beginning on where to hire bike and clothes to the tour was truly seamless. This was my wife’s and my first time in Ireland and you made it so easy for us to be planned and organised for our tour. As for the tour, well what an amazing country you have and the places you took us away from the standard tourist routes was very much appreciated and admired. The trip was just the right pace, not to rushed, plenty of time to stop and see things and take heaps of photos. Having the opportunity to ride ahead at our own pace and meet up with the slower riders later was appreciated throughout the journey. We loved your knowledge and passion for the country and most times us Aussies could understand your accent. You made our first entry to Ireland truly memorable and we thank you so much for that.

Ian and Nikki

I had an amazing five day motorcycle tour throughout Donegal with True North Bike Tours. Our guide, Bernard showed us amazing sights and places that I would have never discovered on my own, despite the extensive research I do before my trips. I still have vivid images in my mind of the stunning view from a lookout high above of the Foyle River, the spectacularly beautiful and peaceful ride through farmland and rolling hills on route to Letterkenny, and the exhilarating (and slightly terrifying) ride through the Glengesh Pass that Bernard gave me the confidence to do. I hope to ride with True North Bike Tours again.

Having been on many a bike tour with Bernard over the last 10 years . Scotland, England, France and every corner of Ireland. He has a great knowledge of the best roads to ride, great navigation skills and knows the best places to get a good cup of coffee. There is not a better man to lead you on your way around this beautiful island of ours. With all the local knowledge and experience Bernard has I can guarantee that anyone taking one of his self guided or guided tours will travel the best roads and see the best this country has to offer . So if you want to see the best that we have to offer go with Bernard and True North bike tours.
